Natural, old-fashioned spring cleaning tricks

Spring is here, which means it's time to give your home a Spring Clean.

However, you don't need to settle for cleansers that are full of harmful chemicals to deep clean your home. In fact, there are many natural, environmentally-friendly cleaning methods that will make your home sparkle and shine.

Here are some traditional ways to make Spring cleaning more eco-friendly:

Vinegar

Did you know that vinegar can do the same job as an expensive limescale remover? According to historian and writer Lucy Lethbridge's book "Spit and Polish," it'll do the job even better! Not only can vinegar remove limescale, but it can also get rid of rust and polish stainless steel. You can even rub it around the seal of your washing machine to remove black slime from detergents!

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is another great solution for cleaning grime in your home, all while leaving behind a fresh clean scent. In the 19th century, it was used to clean marble surfaces. Now, it can help remove limescale from granite. Even more beneficial than the lemon juice itself is its citric acid content, which can cut through grease, unclog drains and kill bacteria. It can also help to eliminate bad odors in dishwashers - just throw some lemon juice on the bottom of the machine and run it on a hot cycle!

Rhubarb

According to Express UK, stewed rhubarb is actually a powerful acidic cleanser that can help remove rust stains off of clothing and pans. Just boil a bunch of rhubarb - leaves still attached - and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Then, spread the rhubarb over the clothing or pan, let it sit for a few hours and wash it off.

Olive oil

Use olive oil to buff up your wooden furniture and watch it sparkle and shine. Good Housekeeping recommends mixing a solution that is one part lemon and two parts olive oil to clean your wood perfectly, all while making it smell lemony fresh.

Baking soda

Want your carpeting and rugs to look as clean as the day you purchased them? Sprinkle them with a liberal amount of baking soda. After about 15 minutes, vacuum up the solution along with the dirt and dust and your carpet will look as good as new.
